Is there any way to make this setup work? Maybe I could install M1 support onto Macbooks's OS somehow?.Apart from that, I assume that means that when I disconnect from iMac and want to use Macbook independently it will require reinstalling macOS once again, which is obviously suboptimal. The only one I found online was this one from Belkin at Amazon for 22. All you need is a mini Displayport to mini Displayport cable. Certain vintages of iMac built since 2009 have the ability to function as a secondary display for other Macs that have Thunderbolt ports. I'm not a big fan of reinstalling the OS on the work laptop: I already have everything set up and I'm afraid that would mean I lose some of the settings. That’s when I found out about Target Display Mode.
I assume that's because the macOS on Macbook is designed for Intel architecture, and while running on M1 hardware it needs to install a different set of OS components.

While choosing boot drive on iMac it says "This volume does not have any authorised users for this computer." and asks to authorize one of them, which I can do, but for some reason, it doesn't seem to save it and keeps asking me to repeat the password indefinitely.Īnyway, if I skip this step, I get a message "The version of macOS on the selected disk needs to be reinstalled". It is recognized as a drive, which is good. I ran Macbook Pro in Target Disk mode while connected to iMac via Thunderbolt 3 cable. I assumed Target Disk mode is what I could use, so I boot iMac using MacBook drive and macOS this way I assume I would be able to use the iMac screen and peripherals, and keep MacBook shut in the corner of the desk. So, I'm looking for a way to save space and utilize the bigger screen on the iMac. I don't usually need to run them at the same time though. I have limited space on my desk, where I need to keep both computers while switching between them throughout the day.
